Virje Waterfall: The Easy One Near Bovec
A short, family-friendly walk to Virje — a wide, gentle waterfall dropping into a vivid turquoise pool just outside Bovec.
If Boka is the Soča Valley’s showstopper, Virje is its gentle counterpoint — a wide, soft curtain of water sliding into a pool of unreal turquoise, reached by a walk so short you’ll wonder why it isn’t busier.
The walk
From the small parking area near Plužna, just outside Bovec, a clear path leads to the falls in around 10 minutes, mostly flat. It’s one of the few waterfalls in the valley genuinely suited to young kids and casual walkers — no scrambling, no exposure.
What you’ll find
Virje isn’t tall or thunderous. Its appeal is the colour and calm: water fanning over a mossy lip into a round, jewel-green pool. That green is the valley’s signature — limestone rock flour suspended in the water, not glacier melt.
It photographs beautifully in soft light. Early morning or an overcast day gives the most even tones; harsh midday sun blows out the water’s colour.
Practical notes
- The pool is cold and the site is small — admire it rather than swimming in it, to keep it pristine.
- Parking is limited; arrive early in summer.
- Combine with Boka Waterfall (a few minutes away on the same road) for an easy waterfall double-header out of Bovec.
