Things to Do in Bovec: The Upper Valley Hub
Bovec is the Soča Valley's adventure base — rafting, canyoning, the highest roads in Slovenia, Boka and Virje waterfalls. A local's rundown of what to actually do.
Bovec sits at the wild upper end of the valley, ringed by the highest peaks in Slovenia. It’s the place to base yourself if you came for adventure and alpine scenery. Here’s how to fill your days.
On the water
- Raft or kayak the Soča — the classic Bovec experience (remember the 2026 river permit, ~€18–21).
- Canyoning in the side gorges, and ziplining across a valley for dry-land thrills.
Waterfalls minutes away
- Boka — at 144 m, the highest waterfall in Slovenia, on the road just west of town.
- Virje — a short, easy walk to a gentle fall and turquoise pool.
The high roads
Bovec is the launch pad for Slovenia’s two highest roads:
- The Vršič Pass (1,611 m, 50 hairpins) toward Kranjska Gora.
- The Mangart road (2,055 m, the highest drive in the country).
Up high
In summer the Kanin cable car lifts you toward the high karst plateau above town for big-mountain views and hiking; in winter it’s Slovenia’s highest ski area. Check seasonal operating status before counting on it.
How long to stay
Two to three days balances a water day, a high-road day, and a waterfall-and-relax day.
