Rafting the Soča River: What to Know for 2026
Seasons, difficulty, the mandatory 2026 river permit, and how to pick a section — a straight guide to rafting Slovenia's most famous river.
The Soča is one of Europe’s classic whitewater rivers, and rafting it is the headline activity in Bovec, the valley’s adventure hub. The water is fast, clear and very cold, framed by white limestone and pine.
The 2026 permit
The most important practical change: for the 2026 season a river permit is mandatory, costing roughly €18–21. If you book through a licensed agency, they usually handle or include the permit — but confirm it is covered when you book, so you are not caught out at the put-in.
Seasons and difficulty
- April–June (snowmelt): highest, fastest flow. The most exciting rafting, and the coldest. Better suited to those comfortable with bigger water.
- July–August: lower, warmer, friendlier. The standard family and first-timer window.
- September: quieter, with flow depending on autumn rain.
The commonly rafted stretches sit around grade II–III, with sections that vary by water level. Outfitters match the run to conditions and group experience.
Booking sensibly
- Go with a licensed agency — they provide wetsuit, splash jacket, helmet, life vest and a guide.
- Wear the wetsuit properly; the water is cold regardless of air temperature.
- Bring a change of clothes and shoes that can get wet.
- Morning trips often have calmer wind and better light.
Beyond rafting
If rafting is sold out or the water is too high, Bovec also offers kayaking, canyoning and zip-lining. For something slower, swap the boat for a walk to Boka Waterfall nearby.
