Gorges & Emerald Pools of the Soča
The Great Gorge, Tolmin Gorge and the deep emerald canyons where the Soča is at its most intense — what to see and how to walk them safely.
If the open river is the Soča’s calm face, the gorges are where it shows its power. Here the water narrows, deepens and turns the richest emerald of all — and these are exactly the places not to swim.
Velika korita — the Great Gorge
Near Lepena, the river carves the Velika korita, a canyon up to about 15 m deep and 750 m long. Footbridges cross it, giving you the dizzying look straight down into the green. It’s the signature gorge of the upper valley and an easy stop off the road.
Mala korita and the smaller slots
Downstream there are tighter, shorter sections — the “small gorges” — where the river pinches between polished rock. Less dramatic in scale, but often quieter.
Tolmin Gorge
At the lowest point of Triglav National Park, the Tolminka and Zadlaščica rivers cut twin slots crossed by the Devil’s Bridge and watched over by the wedged Bear’s Head boulder. There’s also a 20 °C warm spring here — milder than the river, but not for bathing. (Full guide linked below.)
Why the water looks like that
The unreal colour is limestone rock flour — fine rock particles suspended in the water — not glacier melt. In the gorges the depth and stillness concentrate the effect.
Safety
- Stay out of the water in gorges. Current funnels through the narrows; it is the single most dangerous place to swim on the river.
- Paths along the rims have drop-offs and slick rock — keep children close and wear grippy shoes.
- Some gorge trails close in winter or after rockfall; check before you go.
Pair them
String Tolmin Gorge and Velika korita together for a gorge-focused day, breaking it up with a calm-water swim somewhere safe in between.
